Tired of store-bought edibles? Learn how to make RSO gummies at home

This recipe was updated and revised fully in September 2023

Unleash your inner cannabis chef with our comprehensive guide to crafting delicious and potent RSO gummies.

Say goodbye to store-bought edibles and hello to a world of homemade goodness. Learn how to make RSO gummies that are tasty and long-lasting, thanks to our special mold inhibitor tip.

If you’ve made Infused Gummy Bears with “canna-oil” or cannabutter in the past, you may have been disappointed by the taste and texture.

My favorite texture and taste come from using RSO to infuse gummies.

Using Full Extract Cannabis Oil, also known as FECO or Rick Simpson Oil, which is RSO is the perfect way make stronger THC gummies as well.

You’ll see these acronyms used interchangeably, although the process of making them may differ.

FECO or RSO concentrates allow you to add a higher dose of THC or other cannabinoids without compromising all the yummy taste and texture of your FECO gummies.

Another pitfall of home cannabis-infused recipes is that your infused THC gummy bears will begin to mold if left at room temperature or if stored for too long in the refrigerator.

This updated recipe will solve these issues with the addition of a mold inhibitor, making RSO gummies last even longer.

Shelf stable RSO FECO gummies are a game changer!

As always, I have linked as many of the actual brands and products that I use in testing my recipes in my own kitchen as possible.

Ingredients You’ll Need to Make Shelf Stable RSO Gummies

Let’s look at the individual ingredients needed for cannabis infused Gummies and define some of the less common ones.

Bulk Unflavored Knox Gelatin: This is a clear, odorless protein derived from collagen found in animal bones, hides, and tissues.

It’s responsible for giving gummies their chewy, jelly-like consistency.

Jello Flavor: A popular gelatin dessert, it introduces both flavor and color to the recipe.

Available in a variety of flavors, it allows for customization of the final gummy taste.

Water: A universal solvent, it helps dissolve and mix various ingredients and plays a vital role in the gelatin blooming process.

Corn Syrup: A sweet syrup derived from cornstarch, it provides sweetness, enhances the gummy’s texture, and prevents sugar crystallization.

LorAnn Oil Flavoring: Highly concentrated, these are used to intensify or introduce additional flavors that complement the base Jello flavor.

You may use food-grade citrus essential oils instead. Essential oils are much stronger, though. I start with about 10 drops. I use the Vitality Dietary Culinary Oils from Young Living. (white labeled)

Sunflower Lecithin: A fatty substance extracted from sunflower seeds, it acts as an emulsifier.

It helps ingredients mix well together, especially in recipes where oil-based and water-based components are combined.

According to WebMD, “Lecithin is a mixture of fats that are essential to cells in the human body. It can be found in many foods, including soybeans and egg yolks.”

My go-to choice is the liquid lecithin sourced from sunflowers.

Some people steer clear of the soy-based lecithin due to allergy concerns.

Feel free to use granules or liquid interchangeably.

Food Grade Glycerin: A clear, odorless liquid, glycerin is sweet-tasting and viscous.

It helps with texture and can act as a solvent for certain ingredients.

As a beginner I would use a neutral oil such as MCT oil as a carrier to dissolve FECO and RSO in, but found glycerin to be far superior.

In addition, the added sweetness helps hide the unwanted taste of the oil.

RSO or Feco Syringe: RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) or FECO (Full Extract Cannabis Oil) is a concentrated form of cannabis.

It contains a full profile of cannabinoids and can be sourced in various potencies and cannabinoid ratios. (Full-Spectrum)

Potassium Sorbate as a Mold Preventative

This ingredient has become indispensable for me, especially when it comes to enhancing the longevity of my gummies.

You can easily find it at a reasonable price from candy-making suppliers like LorAnn.

(I’ve included the exact one I use in the equipment links.)

Foods like cheese, yogurt, and dried fruits typically contain potassium sorbate not just for its preservation qualities but also for its neutral taste, which avoids leaving a lingering aftertaste.

Wondering how much LorAnn Mold Inhibitor (Potassium Sorbate) to use?

It’s essential to know the weight of your batch, which can vary based on your infusion method and mold size.

This recipe could yield anywhere between 95 to 140 pieces!

For more precision in determining the necessary quantity, consider the average weight of your completed batches.

The guideline from LorAnn Oils suggests 2 tsp for every 5 lbs of the total batch.

Take, for instance, a store-bought 10-ounce bag of Haribo gummies, which contains roughly 120 bears.

Based on this, I deduced that this recipe would require about ¼ tsp of the mold inhibitor.

Here’s a breakdown of LorAnn Oils Mold Inhibitor measurements:

  • 2 tsp for every 5 lbs or 80 ounces
  • 1 tsp for 40 ounces
  • ½ tsp for 20 ounces
  • ¼ tsp for 10 ounces
  • ⅛ tsp for 5 ounces.

This ingredient helps in preserving the freshness and extending the shelf life of edibles by preventing mold and microbial growth.

How to Add RSO or FECO to Any Gummy Bear Recipe

Combine and warm:

⅛-¼  cup Glycerin or you can use additional corn syrup or honey in a pinch

1 tsp Sunflower or Soy Lecithin ( liquid or granules)

Add the desired amount of concentrated Full Extract Cannabis Oil (FECO/RSO). Choose THC, CBD, or any cannabinoid your dispensary offers. You can make your own combinations or ratios!

I mix these ingredients with a glass or metal measuring cup on an electric mug warmer. Heat and stir often until the mixture is well combined.

Do not boil. If you don’t have one of these handy warmers, you’ll need a very small saucepan and stir the mixture constantly until you’re satisfied.

I prefer to heat these ingredients separately to limit my cannabis from extra heat, and this step helps to emulsify the oils into the main candy mixture.

You don’t want to overheat and degrade any of the cannabinoids.

A mug warmer or candle warmer, as they are called, is amazingly handy for mixing cannabis oils at home.

They are inexpensive, and I can usually find them in thrift stores!

This cannabis gummy recipe makes approximately 120 bears or 96 square pieces from the molds mentioned in equipment list.

How to Make THC Gummy Bears

  1. Combine unflavored gelatin and water in a saucepan, allowing it to dissolve or “bloom.”
  2. Separately, mix lecithin, glycerin, and FECO, warming to emulsify. Set aside.
  3. Incorporate flavored jello and corn syrup into the gelatin mixture on low heat until blended.
  4. Once off the heat, add LorAnn Oil flavoring or food-grade essential oils, optional mold inhibitor, and your cannabis oil, ensuring thorough mixing.
  5. Prepare silicone molds on a tray, cleaning if new. Lightly condition molds with a neutral cooking spray, wiping any excess.
  6. Use a dropper or silicone bottle to fill molds and note the batch quantity for dosing calculations.
  7. Chill molds in the fridge or freezer until candies are set.
  8. Once set, pop candies out. Optionally, air dry for improved texture. (notes on air drying below)
  9. Store in labeled airtight containers or bags. If you skip the mold inhibitor, be sure to refrigerate. They freeze well, too. Clearly mark as medicated.
  10. Calculate dosage per candy piece for safe consumption. Always consume responsibly, start with a low dose, and be patient as edibles can take time to take effect. Remember, homemade gummies may have varied dosages.

Remember: Always keep away from children and inform adults they are medicated.

Pro Tips

  1. Try making this recipe without cannabis first. Once you are confident, you can begin with the real THC gummy bears.

  2. Look into CBD concentrates and other lesser cannabinoids to infuse your gummies with. You can make your own ratio with THC or skip the THC. This works as a great CBD RSO recipe as well.

  3. Refrigerate or freeze your infused gummy bears to preserve potency and shelf life, especially if you choose to skip the potassium sorbate LorAnn mold inhibitor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to Air Dry THC gummies

Drying is said to improve texture and make them more like store-bought candy.

Since drying removes moisture, this step will naturally extend the shelf life.

To air dry, individually place each piece on a drying rack or a parchment-lined cookie sheet.

Cover the gummies with a flour-sack towel or other breathable lint-free cloth and allow them to dry for 24 to 72 hours.

Turn pieces as needed.

What are RSO Gummies?

RSO gummies are edible cannabis treats infused with Rick Simpson Oil, a potent cannabis extract. They offer a convenient and discreet way to consume cannabis, often with long-lasting effects.

What is in RSO Gummies?

RSO gummies typically contain a mixture of Rick Simpson Oil, gelatin or pectin, sweeteners, and flavorings. The RSO provides the active THC and/or CBD content.

What Does RSO Mean?

RSO stands for Rick Simpson Oil, a cannabis oil extract named after its creator, Rick Simpson. It is a highly concentrated form of cannabis oil that is often used for its potential therapeutic benefits.

What Kind of High Does RSO Give?

The high from RSO is often described as intense and long-lasting. It can produce both cerebral and physical effects, depending on the strain of cannabis used to make the oil.

How Long Does It Take for RSO to Get You High?

The onset time for RSO can vary, but it generally takes between 30 minutes to 2 hours to feel the effects when consumed in edible form like gummies.

What is the Difference Between RSO and Concentrates?

While both are concentrated forms of cannabis, RSO is a full-spectrum extract that includes a range of cannabinoids and terpenes.

Concentrates like shatter or wax may be more refined and lack some of these compounds.

Does RSO Put You to Sleep?

RSO can have sedative effects, especially if made from indica-dominant strains. However, the effect can vary from person to person and depend on the dosage.

Does RSO Help with Pain?

Many users report that RSO provides relief from various types of pain, although scientific research is still ongoing. Its anti-inflammatory properties are often cited for pain relief.

How Long Does RSO Get You High For?

The duration of the high from RSO can vary but is generally long-lasting, often ranging from 4 to 8 hours, depending on individual tolerance and dosage.

If you are new to cannabis or have a low tolerance, we suggest starting with 1 or 2 milligrams of cannabis.

Otherwise, people typically take anywhere from 5mg of THC to 10mg of THC at a time, translating into about 1 or 2 gummies, depending on their strength.

Always start low and go slow!

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp Knox Unflavored Gelatin

  • 1 sm. box Jello Flavor of your Choice

  • 1/2 Cup Water

  • 2 Tbsp Corn Syrup

  • 1 Dram LorAnn Oil of your choice

  • 1-2 Tsp Sunflower Lethicin

  • 1/8 – 1/4 Cup Vegetable Glycerin

  • 1 Syringe RSO

  • 1/4 Tsp Mold Inhibitor

Directions

  • Combine unflavored gelatin and water in a small to medium saucepan. Stir to mix with a spoon or silicone rubber scraper. Let sit for 5 minutes to allow the gelatin to dissolve or “bloom.”
  • While the gelatin “blooms,” mix 1 tsp of lecithin into ⅛ cup of glycerin and ½ syringe of FECO. Warm the mixture to help emulsify. I use a mug warmer to achieve this step. You’ll need to stir a lot! Note: If you use a full syringe of RSO or FECO, use ¼ cup of glycerin and 2 tsp lecithin. Set this aside
  • Stir in flavored jello and corn syrup into the saucepan with jello. Turn the stove burner to low to medium-low, depending on your stove. Keep stirring your ingredients until well mixed. Do not boil.
  • Once your mixture seems incorporated, turn the stove burner off and add the entire 1-dram bottle of LorAnn Oil flavoring of your choice and the optional LorAnn Mold Inhibitor. Stir well. ( Work quickly to keep the mixture warm enough to pour into molds.
  • Next, Add your cannabis oil mixture and stir and stir until you are confident it’s incorporated as evenly as possible. Although many recipes warn against using a whisk and causing foamy bubbles, I find it necessary to get the cannabis oils to mix in.
  • Set your silicone molds on a tray or cookie sheet. (If your molds are new, wash and dry completely beforehand. To condition the molds, spritz lightly with a neutral cooking spray such as coconut oil. Wipe out any excess oil with a lint-free towel. Do not overspray)

Use a dropper or silicone squeeze bottle to fill your molds quickly. Count how many pieces your batch made. You’ll need to know this number to estimate the strength of your edible.
  • When your gummies are firm enough to be moved, place them into the refrigerator until set. I have also put them in the freezer with no problems. The trays may be necessary to keep them level and avoid spills.
  • When the candy is firmly set and ready, “pop the squares out.” I always work over a silicone mat. At this point, you can choose to take an additional step of air drying to improve texture. (See notes on how to air dry) I always skip this step and am very pleased with the outcome.

If you skip the air dry process and the pieces seem to stick together a bit, you can lightly give a spritz of coconut oil. Hold coconut oil spray 10-12 inches above and give a quick spritz. Alternatively, you can spray your hands and lightly toss the pieces around.
  • Package and label your gummies in an airtight container or bag. To preserve the integrity of the cannabinoids, store gummies in the refrigerator or freezer long-term, although If you use the mold inhibitor, you may leave room temperature. Label well with warnings and dosage if known.
  • Divide the strength or milligrams of cannabis by the number of pieces to determine the approximate strength of each. I can’t stress enough to package and label with warnings that your candy is medicated. Store safely away from children or unsuspecting adults.
  • Start Low and Go Slow! The medicated edible rule is to start with a very low dose of THC and slowly increase until you know the effect. Edibles can take up to 3 hours to peak in some individuals and last up to 8 hours.

Learn to know your body and your dose. Everyone’s endocannabinoid system is different. Some people prefer 2mg and others feel nothing after 100mg. Also, homemade gummies aren’t uniform in size or dosage, so keep that in mind.

  • Do i need to use the dram of lorann flavor during the trial run ? Lol stuff is expensive lol

    • How do I adjust the glycerin and lecithin to add two syringes to this recipe? I like my stuff strong LOL.

      • The Glycerin and lecithin are only there to help "carry" the RSO and help distribute it evenly. I wouldn't change a thing. Warm and use a small battery operated "coffee/milk frother" to help make sure they are mixed very well or immulsiefied.

        • I have been using one gram RSO to make choclate edibles. I have always divided the number into 1000. Now I realized it should of been the percentage as 75% the. Then I get further confused by reading I should multiply by 1000. I get confused on the numbers. Then some rso’s are like 365. So confused. I need to not be so confused as I am now doing gummies. I used a recipe with Rso mixed in coconut oil. Which I should not be using anything coconut with a family history of cardiac problems. I will use your recipe next time I do gummies. I did not have all the ingredients. I would not use mold inhibitor because I put everything in freezer.

          • Each company or state may have a different way to label the strenghth. Don't feel bad, it is often confusing. Basically we just need to know how many milligrams are in the syringe to determine the seving sizes. These recipes are adaptable, so make them work for your needs. Best of luck!

          • Thank you for. I have made a few times now. Full gram of rso. My tweaks are if you don't care about calories: kool-aid flavors match most jello flavors. Cheaper than Lorraine flavors. Apple juice instead of water for jello, ir will bloom faster but it's fine. I don't care about air bubbles. I add jello mix to my rso mix ( less product loss) which is in a Pyrex measure glass. Easy to pour and scrape into bottle for dispensing into mold.

    • No, it's not necessary unless you want to test the flavor. Most people are only worried about practicing in order to make sure the gummies "set up" well.

  • How do I adjust the glycerin and lecithin to add two syringes to this recipe? I like my stuff strong LOL.

    • David, I only use enough glycerin to help "carry" the oil. I try to never use more than 1/4 cup. an 1/8 - 1/4 still should be enough for a whole syringe. As for the Lecithin, if it's liquid add to this glycerin RSO / mixture and I'd stick to no more than 2 tsp. Using a tiny frother immersion blender into a warm mixture helps. Slowly add it to the jello mixture.

  • @Dave You don't have to adjust it. I would suggest food grade polysorbate 80. It is a way more efficient emulsifier without the nasty taste of sunflower lecithin.

    • The recipe was made with half of a 1 gram syringe of FECO or RSO. The amount to add is up to you. If you bought the FECO, it will be easy to determine the strength. In my experience, homemade FECO is stronger than what you can buy.

  • What a great recipe, thank you! I make my gummies with USDA organic CBD oil and it is the best I found online!
